FREE GRACIE JIU-JITSU WORKSHOP 101

We are proud to offer a FREE Gracie Street Defense workshop on Sunday Feb 12 (11am - 1pm) with Jason Sodenkamp.  This is an introductory workshop to the Gracie Street Defense Program for adult beginners, where you will learn some core Gracie Jiu-Jitsu techniques in a fun, safe, and cooperative environment.  This will be a 1.5 hr class with some extra time allotted for a Q&A.  We recommend wearing comfortable sportswear, no street clothes or jewelry.

The Gracie Street Defense Program comprises of one-hour lessons, each addressing one standing and one ground self-defense technique.  Your can start the program at any time and participate in any class without previous experience and, since safety is our number 1 concern, there is no competitive sparring involved.  Upon successful completion of the program, you will be promoted to Blue Belt and considered "Street Ready".  You then qualify to continue your journey beyond Blue Belt.  Gracie Jiu-Jitsu also consists of hundreds of advanced techniques organized into a clearly defined, systematic curriculum.

Please register below to reserve your spot.  Looking forward to seeing you at the workshop!

Jason Sodenkamp has trained exclusively under Rorion, Ryron, and Rener Gracie (of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu fame) since 2003 and was awarded his Brown Belt in 2015.  He had early success in tournaments during his first 3 years, but decided to turn his focus toward the "street" self-defense aspect of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.  His instructors saw potential in him to teach, and by 2007, he was an assistant instructor at the Gracie Academy in Torrance, CA.  Jason participated in the first of several subsequent Instructor Certification Programs offered at the Gracie Academy beginning in 2008.  in December of 2011, he began a short internship, and then became the head instructor at the Certified Training Center in Hollywood in 2012.  At that time, Jason also began teaching beginner and advanced classes at the newly opened Gracie Academy in Beverly Hills.  He was then awarded his Instructor Bars, as a Purple Belt, by Ryron Gracie.  In July of 2015, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu merged with the Beverly Hills location, where he continues to teach group and private classes, beginner to advanced classes.

Jason teaches hundreds of students every year and is passionate about his mission to make the world a safer place with these life-saving techniques and empowering individuals to take on a path of total wellness in their lives.  He is dedicated to upholding the values and standards that Grand Master Helio Gracie dedicated his life to.

GULF COAST FLOOD RELIEF FUNDRAISER

GULF COAST FLOOD RELIEF FUNDRAISER

The recent flooding in Louisiana and Mississippi is the worst US natural disaster since Hurricane Sandy.  Too often, tragedies such as this is no longer top of mind when the news and social media have moved onto the next event or trending topic, but there is still so much work to be done and many needs still to be met when our attention is diverted to and distracted by something else.

We at Knowles Karate Academy have dedicated a day, Sunday September 11, to raise funds for this very worthwhile cause.  Our special yoga classes on this day are on a donation-basis, with 100% of the money collected going to Gulf Coast Floods Children’s Relief Fund, a fund began by the non-profit charity "Save The Children".

Our yoga instructors are graciously donating their time for this day, so we hope you will join us in helping to make a difference in the lives of these children.

It takes a village.  It starts with you, with me, with each and every one of us.

CLASS TIMES:  10am - 11:15am/  11:30am - 12:45pm/  1pm - 2:15pm/  2:30pm - 3:45pm

If you cannot make it to one of our special fundraising yoga classes but would still like to donate, you can do so directly through this link: www.savethechildren.org

Save the Children is deploying an emergency response team to Baton Rouge to establish child-friendly spaces in emergency shelters and assess children’s most urgent needs in the wake of severe flooding in southeastern Louisiana and southern Mississippi.

According to Sarita Fritzler, Save the Children’s emergency team leader, “Children are the most vulnerable when disaster strikes and it’s critical that their unique needs are are addressed from the outset during emergencies like these terrible floods.  We’re working closely with long-term local partners to make sure children are protected and cared for amidst the turmoil they and their families are experiencing. Thousands of children have been forced from their homes into shelters and many may have no home to return to anytime soon.”

The Save the Children Fund was started in 1919 by Eglantyne Jebb in England.  In 1932, a group of forward-thinking Americans were inspired by her vision and established Save the Children in the United States and soon expanded worldwide in the wake of WWII.  In 2014, the organization helped more than 166 million children through their global movement.  Their mission statement:

“To invest in childhood - every day, in times of crisis and for our future.  In the United States and around the world, we give children a healthy start, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm.  By transforming children’s lives now, we change the course of their future and ours.”

                     __________________________________________________

OUR APPROACH TO PERSONAL SAFETY AND SELF-DEFENSE TRAINING IS THREE-PART:  LEARN TO IDENTIFY THE SIGNS AND SIGNALS OF A POTENTIALLY THREATENING SITUATION TO AVOID THEM; HOW TO MODIFY EXISTING BEHAVIORS AND HABITS TO MAKE YOU LESS OF A POTENTIAL TARGET; AND LEARN LEVERAGED-BASED TECHNIQUES THAT ALLOW YOU TO DEFEND YOURSELF EFFECTIVELY REGARDLESS OF THE SIZE AND STRENGTH OF THE ATTACKER.

OUR DEFENSE TECHNIQUES WILL FOCUS ON BOTH STRIKING AND GRAPPLING TECHNIQUES FOR STANDING AND GROUND SITUATIONS - AS MOST ATTACKERS WILL ATTEMPT TO GET THE VICTIM TO THE GROUND IN THE MAJORITY OF CASES.  OUR CLASSES WILL PUT YOU IN REAL-LIFE SITUATIONS SO YOU CAN TRAIN YOURSELF TO THINK AND REACT QUICKLY.  THE AIM IS TO GAIN CONFIDENCE IN YOURSELF AND YOUR ABILITIES TO IDENTIFY, AVOID AND PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST A DANGEROUS ASSAILANT
